Making a 'cars' cake is easier than you may think.
First, take a rectangular sponge cake. You can get this ready-made from the supermarket, buy a cake-mix or make it yourself. Make some butter icing and cover the cake with it, including the sides. Don't try to be too neat - it's supposed to be the desert!
Next, roll out some gray icing and cut out your child's age to fit the cake (this will make the road). Carefully place this on the top of the cake and decorate as you wish - in the example we used alternate strips of white icing and silver cake-decorating balls to style the road.
Sprinkle the bare butter-icing with demerara sugar and green/brown-coloured dessicated coconut and add CARS™ figurines.
In the example we made some 'Radiator Springs' and 'Route 66' Signs to further decorate the cake.
One thing that never fails at kids parties and is so easy to make is jelly. To make these, simply buy some jelly in strawberry, blackcurrant (and lemon if you can find it), make it up as per the directions and pour it into individual portions - we used disposable plastic cups
Next print out the Flag background and cut it out in 21 x 7 square sections. Than wrap each section around the top of a cocktail stick, secure it with some glue and repeat until you have 2 flags for each child.
Finally, stick 2 flags in each jelly like the starter flags at the Grand Prix.
If you're feeling a bit more adventurous you may want to try baking these cookies.
To make these either buy a cookie-mix from the supermarket or use our cookie recipe. Next, cut your cookie dough into car shapes (try amazon.com below for a good selection of cookie cutters) and cook as per the recipe.
Lastly, the fun bit. Make up some royal icing and get creative!
Piston Cup Championship
Have your own Piston Cup Championship with wind-up cars. Before the party, mark a start and finish line with tape. Use a permanent marker to write each child's name on a wind-up car. Use a flag or cloth to start your race...
Luigi's Tire Bean Bag Toss
Place an old tire laying flat on the ground. Mark and "X" a reasonable distance from the tire. Provide a few bean bags for the children to take turns tossing the bean bags into the center of the tire.
Car Jar
Get a large clear plastic jar and put as many Hot Wheel cars and Lego tire wheels in it. The idea is to guess how many WHEELS are in the jar, not cars. It makes it a little harder, and you can have an odd number of wheels by putting in those extra lego tires.
